Which Type of Dental Filling is Right for You?
Despite the big strides in dental care, tooth decay is still an ongoing problem for many people. If it is not treated properly and in a timely manner, this can lead to more serious dental issues like abscessed or even falling teeth. This is why regularly visiting your dentist is important. Do so every six months to check for signs of tooth decay and detect other dental health issues.
If your dentist finds that you have tooth decay, the next step is determining the kind of material to use to fill the cavities. Five are currently in use today: ceramic, composite, glass ionomers, gold, and silver amalgam. Each of these kinds of materials can effectively fill the cavities in the teeth, but some of them are better suited for particular conditions.
Your dentist will determine and decide the right material that best suits your needs, as they take into consideration your current dental health as well as your budget. When choosing the right dental filling, some considerations include the location of the cavity, the severity of the decay, cost, and insurance coverage. Read on as we talk a little about these filling materials.
- Ceramic Fillings – Made of porcelain and very durable, ceramic fillings are a very aesthetically pleasing option. Take note that they can be very expensive and is not the most durable option out there because they can wear the opposite teeth once the porcelain becomes rough.
- Composite Fillings – Because their color can be closely matched to their teeth, composite fillings are an attractive option. Their downside is that they are more expensive compared to silver amalgam fillings. Also, they are not as durable.
- Glass Ionomers – Otherwise known as acrylic fillings, glass ionomers usually last for less than five years. This makes them a great choice for children because their teeth are still changing. One more good thing about this material is that it releases fluoride, thus helping in preventing tooth decay.
- Gold Fillings – Strong and non-corrosive, gold fillings can last up to 15 years as long as it is properly cared for. Take note, though, that they are more expensive compared to silver amalgam fillings and will require more than one visit to your dentist to fit it correctly.
- Silver Amalgam Fillings – Silver amalgams might be strong and sturdy, but many people do not find them very aesthetically pleasing. Also, compared to other kinds of dental fillings, they have a tendency to contract and expand, which can cause a tooth to crack. The long-term safety of silver amalgam fillings should also be considered because they contain mercury, which is a known neurotoxin.
A qualified dental practitioner is the best person to help you decide on the right kind of material that should be used for your dental fillings. However, do not hesitate to voice out any concerns or issues you might have regarding the choice, should there be any.
